Cataract surgery is a common and highly effective surgical procedure used to treat cataracts, a condition in which the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy and impairs vision. The surgery involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) to restore clear vision.
Improved Vision: Cataract surgery involves the removal of the clouded natural lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). This can significantly improve vision clarity and quality, allowing patients to see more clearly and vividly.
Reduced Glare and Halos: Cataracts can cause glare and halos around lights, particularly at night. Cataract surgery can reduce or eliminate these visual disturbances, leading to more comfortable nighttime vision.
Correction of Other Vision Issues: In some cases, cataract surgery can help correct other vision problems, such as nearsightedness or farsightedness, through the choice of the appropriate intraocular lens.
Long-Lasting Results: Once a cataract is removed and replaced with an IOL, it does not return. This means that the improved vision achieved through cataract surgery is typically permanent.
Pre-Procedure
Consultation: The patient undergoes a comprehensive eye examination to assess the severity of cataracts and discuss their medical history and visual needs.
Selection of IOL: The ophthalmologist helps the patient choose the type of IOL that will best suit their vision needs, such as monofocal, multifocal, or toric lenses.
Discussion: The surgeon explains the cataract surgery procedure, potential benefits, risks, and expected outcomes. The patient's questions and concerns are addressed during this consultation.
Procedure
Anesthesia: Cataract surgery is typically performed using local anesthesia to numb the eye. The patient may also receive a mild sedative to help them relax.
Phacoemulsification: The surgeon makes a small incision on the cornea and uses a technique called phacoemulsification to break up the cloudy lens into tiny fragments. The fragments are then gently suctioned out.
IOL Placement: The artificial intraocular lens (IOL) is inserted through the same incision and positioned in the lens capsule, where the natural lens was located.
Closing the Incision: The incision is designed to be self-sealing and usually does not require stitches. The eye's natural healing process helps the incision heal.
Post-Procedure
Recovery: After the surgery, the patient is monitored in a recovery area for a short period. Most patients can go home on the same day.
Eye Shield: A protective shield may be placed over the eye to prevent accidental rubbing or pressure during the initial healing phase.
