A laser stapedectomy is a surgical procedure performed to treat a condition known as otosclerosis. Otosclerosis is a hearing disorder characterized by the abnormal growth of bone in the middle ear, particularly around the stapes bone. This abnormal bone growth can interfere with the normal movement of the stapes, leading to conductive hearing loss.
The laser stapedectomy procedure aims to improve hearing by removing or reshaping the affected stapes bone to allow for better sound transmission. It is considered a minimally invasive surgical technique that utilizes a laser to precisely target and remove the problematic bone tissue.
Procedure
Anesthesia: The patient is given local or general anesthesia to ensure comfort during the procedure.
Access: A small incision is made behind the ear to access the middle ear.
Laser Ablation: A laser beam is used to precisely remove the excess bone growth on the stapes and nearby structures. The laser energy vaporizes the unwanted bone tissue while minimizing damage to surrounding areas.
Stapes Mobilization: Once the abnormal bone is removed, the surgeon may reshape or mobilize the stapes bone to restore its proper movement.
Prosthesis Placement: In some cases, a tiny artificial prosthesis or graft may be inserted to replace the removed bone and improve sound transmission.
Closure: The incision is closed with sutures, and a dressing or bandage may be applied.
Post-Procedure
Recovery: Patients may experience some discomfort, mild pain, or drainage from the surgical site for a few days.
Follow-up: Regular follow-up appointments with the surgeon are scheduled to monitor healing and hearing improvement.
Hearing Improvement: It may take a few weeks for patients to notice significant improvements in their hearing as the ear heals and adjusts to the changes.
Improved hearing: The procedure aims to restore normal sound transmission through the middle ear, leading to improved hearing for patients with otosclerosis.
Minimally invasive: The use of a laser allows for precise and targeted removal of bone tissue, minimizing damage to surrounding structures.
Shorter recovery time: Laser stapedectomy is often associated with a quicker recovery compared to traditional surgical techniques.
