Haemorrhoids surgery, also known as haemorrhoidectomy, is a surgical procedure to remove swollen and inflamed blood vessels (haemorrhoids) that develop in the rectum or anus. Haemorrhoids can cause pain, itching, and discomfort, and if they become severe or do not respond to non-surgical treatments, surgery may be recommended.
Pre-Procedure
Diagnosis: The doctor will perform a physical examination and may use a proctoscope or sigmoidoscope to visualize the haemorrhoids and assess their severity.
Preparation: Before the surgery, patients may be advised to stop taking certain medications that can increase bleeding risk and to follow specific dietary instructions.
Procedure
Anesthesia: Haemorrhoidectomy is usually performed under general anesthesia, which means the patient will be unconscious during the surgery.
Incision: The surgeon makes incisions around the haemorrhoids to access and remove them. The procedure can be performed using different techniques, including open surgery, closed (ligation and excision) technique, or stapled haemorrhoidopexy (PPH).
Removal: The surgeon carefully removes the haemorrhoids and may also suture the remaining tissue to promote healing.
Post-Procedure
Recovery: After the surgery, patients are monitored in a recovery room before being moved to a regular hospital room.
Pain Management: Pain medications are provided to manage pain and discomfort after the surgery.
Diet: Patients are usually advised to follow a soft diet and avoid straining during bowel movements to support healing.
