What is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the cells of the breast. It is one of the most common cancers affecting women, although it can also occur in men. Breast cancer can originate in different parts of the breast, such as the ducts that carry milk to the nipple or the glands that produce milk.

Types of Breast Cancer:

Symptoms:

• • A lump or thickening in the breast or underarm.

  • Change in the size, shape, or appearance of the breast.

  • Unexplained pain in the breast or nipple.

  • Nipple discharge, other than breast milk.

  • Skin changes on the breast, such as redness, dimpling, or puckering.

Diagnosis:

• • Mammography: X-ray imaging of the breast tissue to detect abnormalities.

  • Biopsy: Removal of a tissue sample for laboratory analysis to determine if it's cancerous.

  • Imaging tests: MRI, ultrasound, or CT scans to assess the extent of the cancer.

Treatment:

• • Surgery: Lumpectomy (removal of the tumor) or mastectomy (removal of the breast).

  • Radiation therapy: High-energy rays to target and destroy cancer cells.

  • Chemotherapy: Drugs that kill or slow the growth of cancer cells.

  • Hormone therapy: Blocks hormones that fuel certain types of breast cancer.
