What is Bladder Cancer?

Bladder cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the cells of the bladder, which is the organ responsible for storing urine before it is expelled from the body. The lining of the bladder is known as the urothelium, and most bladder cancers start in this layer. However, bladder cancer can also begin in other types of cells in the bladder.

Risk Factors:

• • Smoking: Smoking is one of the most significant risk factors for bladder cancer.

  • Occupational Exposure: Certain jobs that involve exposure to chemicals, dyes, or other substances can increase the risk.

  • Chronic Bladder Infections: Long-term or recurrent bladder infections may slightly increase the risk.

  • Family History: Having a family history of bladder cancer may raise the risk.

Symptoms:

• • Blood in the urine (hematuria) is the most common symptom.

  • Frequent urination or pain during urination.

  • Lower back pain or pain in the pelvic area.

  • Urgency to urinate or feeling the need to urinate but passing only small amounts.

Diagnosis:

• • Urine Tests: Testing the urine for blood or abnormal cells.

  • Cystoscopy: Using a thin tube with a camera to examine the inside of the bladder.

  • Biopsy: Removing a small piece of tissue for examination under a microscope.

Treatment:

• • Bladder cancer is staged based on how far it has spread.

  • Treatment may include surgery to remove the tumor, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy.

  • In some cases, the entire bladder may need to be removed (radical cystectomy).
