Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat chronic sinusitis and other sinus-related conditions. It involves the use of an endoscope, a thin, flexible tube with a camera and light, to visualize and access the sinus cavities through the nostrils. FESS aims to improve the drainage and ventilation of the sinuses, alleviate symptoms, and restore normal sinus function.
Procedure
Anesthesia: The patient is given local or general anesthesia to ensure comfort during the procedure.
Endoscopy: An endoscope is inserted through the nostrils to provide a clear view of the sinus structures on a monitor.
Sinus Access: Surgical instruments are used to remove any obstructing tissue, such as polyps or scar tissue, and to open blocked sinus passages.
Sinus Drainage: The surgeon may enlarge the natural openings of the sinuses to promote better drainage and airflow.
Tissue Removal: Diseased or inflamed tissue is carefully removed to improve sinus function and reduce symptoms.
Correction of Deviated Septum: If a deviated nasal septum is present, it may be corrected during the procedure to improve breathing and sinus function.
Post-Procedure
Recovery: Patients may experience mild discomfort, congestion, or drainage from the nose for a few days.
Sinus Care: Patients are typically advised to irrigate their sinuses with saline solutions to promote healing and prevent infections.
Minimally invasive: FESS is performed through the nostrils, avoiding the need for external incisions. This leads to less scarring, reduced pain, and quicker recovery.
Improved sinus function: By removing obstructions and opening blocked passages, FESS helps improve sinus drainage and ventilation, reducing the risk of recurrent infections.
